DESCRIPTION:Join Weeksville Heritage Center\, Creative Urban Alchemy\, and the Beam Center to unveil Osisi Obodo\, a new modular shade and gathering structure\, on Thursday\, June 25. \n\n\n\nWeeksville Heritage Center\, Creative Urban Alchemy\, and the Beam Center will unveil Osisi Obodo\, a new modular shade and gathering structure on the historic grounds. The project responds to the lack of tree coverage and green space in Northern Crown Heights\, where urban density and heat create real climate risk for residents. The structure was built by youth from the Kingsborough NYCHA Houses community\, who received carpentry mentorship and compensation through workshops held January through May 2026. With the unveiling\, Weeksville expands its role as an official New York City cooling site and adds a permanent outdoor space for programming\, gathering\, and community life. \n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Black & Free: Pleasure Histories
DESCRIPTION:On June 4\, Black & Free: Pleasure Histories comes to Weeksville Heritage Center for an evening of film and live performance honoring Black queer and trans legacies of pleasure that are too often excluded from dominant narratives. \n\n\n\nAs one of the nation’s earliest free Black communities\, Weeksville offers a space to reflect on the present through histories of self-determination. Through moving image\, storytelling\, and burlesque\, the evening highlights those who expanded the boundaries of gender\, sexuality\, and embodiment in New York and beyond. \n\n\n\nThe program features a screening of Mary of Ill Fame (2020–21) by Tourmaline\, a fictional narrative grounded in the life of Mary Jones\, a Black trans woman and sex worker in 1830s New York. The screening is paired with excerpts from We Been Here\, a showcase honoring Black burlesque legends Sahji (1940s) and Jean Idelle (1950s–60s)\, alongside live performances by two of New York’s leading Black burlesque artists\, Queerly Femmetastic and Aurora Boobrealis. \n\n\n\nThis event was curated by Kirya Traber\, and produced by Kelly Greenlight. \n\n\n\nFilm and Performance Series Descriptions \n\n\n\nMary of Ill Fame (2020–2021) shapes a fictional story around Mary Jones (played by Rowin Amone)\, a Black trans woman and sex worker who was part of a community of “girls of ill fame” and eventually incarcerated in the 1830s for stealing a man’s wallet. Mary of Ill Fame imagines Jones in Seneca Village\, an autonomous New York City community of free Black and Irish immigrants located on the land occupied today by Central Park. Splicing between images of Jones in brutal confinement and in a gracious\, picturesque Seneca Village home\, Tourmaline builds a fantasy space of power\, freedom\, and pleasure that the actual Jones deserved.  \n\n\n\nRuntime: 17min 14sec \n\n\n\nWe Been Here:  \n\n\n\nHot-cha girls. Strip tease darlings. Exotic dancers. Shake dancers. Hoochie coochie girls. Black women have always been a part of the building and rebuilding of burlesque in America\, but are often left out of the history books. Our unique way of storytelling through movement\, costuming\, props\, and performance is an integral part of the legacy of classic burlesque in the 30s\, 40s\, and 50s as well as the revival of the art form through neo-burlesque in the 90s. Known for snatching souls and taking titles\, she is Grand Master Funk 2024\, the Silver Tusk Awards 2025 Entertainer of the Year\, and Miss Coney Island 2026. Fun fact: This is the first time there has ever been a Black Miss Coney Island since the pageant’s inception in 1924. Queerly loves the smell of books\, practicing sneaky splits\, and the feeling of your money on her skin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by David L. Byrd \n\n\n\nMiss AuroraBoobRealis lights up the night stage with her unique mixture of raw and earthy\, wild and fearless burlesque! She is an interdisciplinary performing artist creating in the intersections of burlesque\, dance\, theater and poetry. Central to her existence is the fact that Aurora cannot and will not separate herself from her art\, race\, or political beliefs. She is a co-founder of Boombox Burlesque: A Hip Hop Burlesque Festival\, brASS: Brown RadicalAss Burlesque\, and back in 2007\, Brown Girls Burlesque. Aurora has graced burlesque stages across the country from NYC to Seattle\, Portland\, Austin\, Boston\, Minneapolis\, Philly\, D.C. and more! She is a multiple Silver Tusk award winner\, Board President of BurlyCon\, mom to a brilliant kid\, and an aspiring Beatboxer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Sam GreggA Guggenheim Fellow and TIME100 Honoree\, Tourmaline is an artist\, filmmaker\, and writer. Tourmaline’s history-making book MARSHA (May 2025) is the first definitive biography of the revolutionary Black trans activist Marsha P. Johnson. Her art is in the permanent collections of The Met\, MoMA\, Tate\, and the Whitney. Her award-winning films — including the critically acclaimed Happy Birthday\, Marsha! — have been widely recognized for their unique blend of historical narrative and speculative futurism. SUMMARY:Peace in Destruction: Art from Rikers Island (Opening Reception)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Peace in Destruction: Art from Rikers Island\, presented by Groundswell at Weeksville Heritage Center. \n\n\n\nBetween 2008 and 2019\, Groundswell created murals at Rikers Island alongside young people impacted by the carceral system. Few of these works have ever been seen outside those walls. This exhibition preserves the visual records and social histories of these murals while centering the lived experiences\, emotions\, and imaginations of young people impacted by incarceration. \n\n\n\nThe opening reception is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Martha Redbone: Freedom is in the Songs
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: Cedic Pilard \n\n\n\nMartha\, vocalist/songwriter/composer and United States Artist fellow\, known for her unique gumbo of folk\, blues\, and gospel\, has developed her own singular style of American Roots music that is a direct reflection of her Southeastern Afro-Indigenous culture and heritage; the Appalachian hills of Harlan County\, Kentucky; and the eclectic grit of pre-gentrified Brooklyn.   \n\n\n\nFor her Spring concert performance at Weeksville Heritage Center\, musician and storyteller Martha Redbone and her ensemble invite the audience to sing along while they perform music spanning the Black American music diaspora\, weaving in her own American story through music that celebrates Black and Indigenous shared histories.  Inspired by Weeksville’s community newspaper\, Freedman’s Torchlight\, dating back to 1866\, Martha will compose two new songs based on the text as part of her Weeksville performance honoring the history and legacy in song\, as one of the oldest Black settlements in New York and the United States. Among the exhibitions she has curated are The Battle of Brooklyn: Fought and Remembered\, Trace/s: Family History Research and the Legacy of Slavery in Brooklyn\, and a pop-up exhibition\, Memories Matter\, in the Euclid Avenue subway station as a collaboration with the MTA’s Vacant Unit Activation Program. She received her Ph.D in US History from New York University\, with her doctoral research focusing on race\, ethnicity\, and immigration in post-Civil Rights Era Brooklyn schools. Dominique regularly writes and lectures on Blackness in America\, schools and education\, and New York City history. \n\n\n\nOleana Whispering Dove\, Keeper of Cultural Lifeways\, has worked as a museum professional for over 20 years and now curates’ Native American programs\, spotlighting Traditional Contemporary Indigenous artists. Likewise\, Oleana is Smithsonian Museum trained in Lenape Indigenous history and fulfills public speaking engagements on the topics of Carving Out a Legacy and Historic Native American Women Chiefs\, which reflect her Indigenous heritage as a Native American descendant. \n\n\n\nAbout Martha Redbone \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto credit: Christine Jean Chambers \n\n\n\nMartha Redbone is an American vocalist\, songwriter\, composer\, educator\, and United States Artist Fellow\, celebrated for her “brilliant collision of cultures” (The New Yorker)\, embodying the folk and mountain blues sounds of her childhood in “Coal country” Harlan County\, Kentucky with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. Inheriting her powerful gospel-singing father’s voice and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Southeastern Indigenous and African American culture\, Martha broadens the boundaries of American Roots music. Songs and storytelling share her life experience as an Afro-Indigenous mother in an ever-changing world. Working in partnership with longtime collaborator Aaron Whitby\, their works include Original Music and Score for the 2022 Broadway revival “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuff\, Ntozake Shange and 2020 Drama Desk Award- Outstanding Composer in a Play\, Public Theater\, NYC. Honoring the legacy of Zora Neale Hurston\, the groundbreaking writer of Their Eyes Were Watching God\, cultural anthropologist\, folklorist\, playwright\, and choreographer. \n\n\n\nLed by Tanya Birl-Torres of ‘The Zora Project’ (Social Practice Artist-in-Residence at The Shed and Broadway Movement Director & Choreographer) and in collaboration with Anya Andrews (multi-disciplinary artist and educator)\, this family-friendly event brings Hurston’s legacy to life through storytelling\, movement\, and community connection. \n\n\n\nWhat to Expect \n\n\n\nWe will gather\, break bread and listen to some of Hurston’s collected folktales\, learn how they work\, and craft our own modern day stories. As Zora said\, folktales are the “boiled down juice of human living”—everyday wisdom passed down through generations. \n\n\n\nWe will also experience the reimagined choreography of the Buzzard Lope and Crow Dance\, powerful movement pieces adapted from Hurston’s lost choreographic works and ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’. No experience necessary\, just a curiosity and willingness to connect. \n\n\n\nAbout the Facilitators \n\n\n\nTanya Birl-Torres  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTanya Birl-Torres is a New York City–based creative director\, choreographer\, movement director\, systems change facilitator\, and mother. Her work spans major theaters including The Public Theater and Oregon Shakespeare Festival\, and she has performed on Broadway in The Lion King and Memphis. Through her company SoHumanity\, she brings embodied\, liberatory practices into social innovation and education\, co-teaching at Columbia University’s Teachers College. A MAP Fund grantee and Artistic Director of the Washington Heights Womanist Arts Festival\, Tanya is the 2026 Social Practice Artist-in-Residence at The Shed\, where she is developing The Zora Project. \n\n\n\nAnya Andrews \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAnya Isabel Andrews is a migratory interdisciplinary educator\, artist\, emerging writer\, and resurfacing dancer studying Afro-diasporic movement traditions with roots in the Caribbean. Raised in the African American theater tradition\, her pedagogy and artistic practice center the transformative power of storytelling and meaning-making through movement\, dialogue\, and handcrafted adornments designed for performance. She continues to explore the application of her thesis\, Lessons at the Kitchen Table\, which investigates how spaces shape learning–how food\, conversation\, and everyday rituals become sites of knowledge. DESCRIPTION:In this 2-hour workshop\, we will explore the ancient geologies of Hunterfly Road and how the forces beneath the earth brought the community of Weeksville to be what it came to be – a beacon at the crest of an ancient mountain\, and a sanctuary for untold thousands in a chaotic city. \n\n\n\nWe will talk about hills\, mountains\, and the ocean. We will make art using materials from the land. And we will be “foraging” some of the brand new baby spring plants sprouting forth from the rocky soil\, exploring how they may have once been used as food and medicine by the people who sought refuge here. \n\n\n\nClass session is limited to 40 participants \n\n\n\nWeeksville is home\, and your comfort matters to us. The performance turns to the frieze as a space of memory and embodiment\, reflecting on Barthé’s legacy as a Black queer artist and the role of public art in holding and transmitting cultural history.Part Two: Salon-Style PanelsAfter the performance we will transition to a series of salon-style panel conversations that bring together historians\, artists\, curators\, writers\, archivists\, and cultural workers. \n\n\n\n\nLiving for the City: Black Migration from the Outset of the Harlem Renaissance explores Black migratory patterns between Harlem and Brooklyn in the early twentieth century. DuBose-Simons\, a historian at SUNY Westchester Community College; Dominique Jean-Louis of the Center for Brooklyn History; and writer and educator Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts. Robinson received her doctorate in History from the University of Chicago. Since joining the Historical\, she has curated multiple exhibitions and installations\, including Title IX: Activism On and Off the Field\, Crafting Freedom: The Life and Legacy of Free Black Potter Thomas W. Commeraw\, Kara Walker: Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated)\, Women’s Work\, and Running for Civil Rights: The New York Pioneer Club\, 1936-1976. Most recently\, she was lead curator of The Gay Harlem Renaissance\, an exhibition that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the richness of Black LGBTQ+ life in the 1920s and 1930s. Open through March 8\, 2026\, it provides a sweeping portrait of Harlem after the First World War\, when the Great Migration of Black Southerners\, Caribbean migrants\, activists\, writers\, painters\, and performers transformed the neighborhood into the dynamic new capital of Black America.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnne Lessy (Panelist) \n\n\n\nAnne Lessy is the assistant curator of history exhibitions and academic engagement at The New York Historical. She is the co-curator of the Gay Harlem Renaissance and Blacklisted: An American Story\, a traveling exhibition. She worked previously at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. She holds a M.A. and MPhil. in History from Yale University and a B.A. in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University. Prior to pursuing public history\, she was a tenant and community organizer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarla J DuBose-Simons (Panelist) \n\n\n\nCarla J DuBose-Simons\, Ph.D\, earned her doctorate in American History from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in February\, 2013. Her dissertation entitled The ‘Silent Arrival’: The second wave of the Great Migration and its affects on black New York\, 1940-1950\, maps areas of black settlement in the city\, explains the process by which blacks found employment\, analyzes early civil rights activism in the city\, and explores the expansion of black settlement beyond the boundaries of Harlem. She published an article on black settlement in the South Bronx “Movin’ on Up: African Americans in the South Bronx in the 1940s” in the Fall 2014 issue of the New York State Historical Association’s quarterly journal New York History. She is an Associate Professor of History in the Humanities Department at Westchester Community College and is Assistant Department Chair of Modern Languages in her department. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Dominique Jean-Louis (Panelist) \n\n\n\nDominique Jean-Louis\, Ph.D\, is the Chief Historian of the Center for Brooklyn History at the Brooklyn Public Library\, where she has most recently curated the exhibition The Battle of Brooklyn: Fought and Remembered (2026)\, and Trace/s: Family History Research and the Legacy of Slavery in Brooklyn (2025). Previously\, she held the position of Associate Curator of History Exhibitions at New-York Historical Society\, where she co-curated Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow (2018)\, Our Composite Nation: Frederick Douglass’ America (2022)\, and was the co-curator of Black Dolls (2022). She received her B.A. in Comparative Ethnic Studies from Columbia University\, and her Ph.D in US History from New York University\, with her doctoral research focusing on race\, education\, and immigration in post-Civil Rights Era Brooklyn. Her public history practice often places her work at the intersection of history\, art\, and activism\, with recent projects including a map of Black New York City historical sites with an emphasis on public art and green spaces\, and a pop-up exhibition on the history of East New York\, Memories Matter (2025)\, in the Euclid Avenue A/C subway station as a collaboration with the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s Vacant Unit Activation Program. Dominique regularly writes and lectures on Blackness in America\, schools and education\, and New York City history.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSharifa Rhodes-Pitts (Panelist) \n\n\n\nSharifa Rhodes-Pitts has published widely on African-American history\, politics and culture. Her book Harlem is Nowhere: A Journey to the Mecca of Black America\, was a New York Times Notable Book\, a National Book Critics Circle Finalist and cited by BOOKFORUM as the “Best New York Book” written in the twenty years since the magazine’s founding. Her book for young readers\, Jake Makes a World: Jacob Lawrence\, a Young Artist in Harlem (commissioned by MoMA and illustrated by Christopher Myers) was named by Booklist among the year’s top books about art for children. A 2025 recipient of the Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant\, she has contributed to monographs on Simone Leigh\, Dawoud Bey and Richard Mayhew among others. Rhodes-Pitts is an associate professor of writing at Pratt Institute\, where she also leads the Black Studies minor. Sharifa organizes collaborative public projects through The Freedwomen’s Bureau. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrithi Kanakamedala (Moderator) \n\n\n\nPrithi Kanakamedala is Professor of History at Bronx Community College and The Graduate Center CUNY.  Her first full-length book Brooklynites: the Remarkable Story of the Free Black Communities that Shaped a Borough (NYU Press) was a finalist for the 2025 Gotham Book Prize\, long-listed for the 2025 Brooklyn Public Library Book Prize (nonfiction) and won the 2024 Victorian Society of New York Book Award. An active public historian for just under two decades\, Prithi continues to work collaboratively with artists\, curators\, and cultural organizations across New York City.  \n\n\n\nWe Are the Record: Oral Histories and the Black Storytelling Tradition \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaijah Williams (Moderator) \n\n\n\nSaijah Williams is the Oral History Lead at The Public Housing Community Fund and a nonprofit professional with over fifteen years of experience in the sector. She has worked in various settings\, including museums\, schools\, and organizations. Saijah’s career has been guided by her love of art history\, Black history\, cultural preservation\, and community engagement\, which she credits to having been born and raised in the cultural enclave that is Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn\, NY. She has contributed to exhibitions\, publications\, and curricula highlighting diverse\, underrepresented perspectives and stories.  \n\n\n\nSaijah holds a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies and African American Studies from CUNY Brooklyn College. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMadeline Alexander (Panelist) \n\n\n\nMadeline Alexander serves as the Projects Director and a public historian at the Incite Institute\, where she directly oversees various fellowships and Incite’s collaborative efforts and projects. As the Project Manager on the Elders Project\, she facilitated the project’s aims\, which went on to receive awards for DEI\, Activism\, Digital/ Innovative Experiences in Education\, Art\, and Culture. She served as Engagement Coordinator for Black communities at the State Museum of Colorado\, where she co-founded the flagship Blaxplanation program. Her research interests currently focus on the use of media in the public realm as a facilitator and interpreter of intellectual work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZakiya Collier (Panelist) \n\n\n\nZakiya Collier is a multidisciplinary archivist\, memory worker\, and educator whose work explores the role of cooperative archival practices in sustaining cultural memory. She leads The Black Memory Workers\, a community of over 300 members committed to practicing care and intention in the long-term preservation of Black life. Zakiya is currently an Adjunct Professor at Queens College (CUNY) and New York University\, and recently a 2025 Artist-in-Residence with The Laundromat Project. She is also a co-producer on the forthcoming documentary\, Somebody’s Gone\, and co-editor of a special double issue of The Black Scholar on Black Archival Practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael Gaines \n\n\n\nAssociation President (T.A.P.) for 17 years\, during which time he oversaw the renovation of the parks and the restoration of the wall. He is proud of his contributions to the community and looks forward to continuing his work in the future. \n\n\n\nBlack Contemporary Artists\, Creatives & Community-Builders \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDejá Aaliyah Belardo (Moderator)  \n\n\n\nDejá Aaliyah Belardo (she/they) is a curator and painter based in New York City\, born and raised in St. Croix\, U.S. Virgin Islands. They are Associate Curator of Visual Art and Civic Programs at The Shed. Belardo supports boundary-pushing artists\, particularly those historically marginalized\, as they enter the art historical canon. Their experience includes work with the Whitney Museum of American Art\, Pace Gallery\, and training with The Studio Museum in Harlem. They also lecture\, serve on panels\, and maintain an independent studio practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAyesha Williams (Panelist) \n\n\n\nAyesha Williams is the Executive Director of The Laundromat Project\, a Bed-Stuy–based organization supporting multiracial\, multigenerational artists and neighbors committed to social change. With two decades in the arts\, she has worked with visual artists\, led programs\, and generated funding for galleries and nonprofits\, including managing Visual Arts at Lincoln Center and directing Kent Gallery. She serves on the boards of Rivers Institute for Contemporary Art & Thought and The Black School\, and is a member of Independent Curators International. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\ntiffany dockery \n\n\n\ntiffany dockery is the owner of Gladys Books & Wine\, a Black lesbian bookstore and wine bar named after her grandmother\, serving as a community space for literary events\, wine tastings\, and experiences celebrating Black culture and queer joy. She is also Principal Product Manager at Yelp\, building tools to help small businesses thrive. Previously\, tiffany worked at Google\, Etsy\, Instagram\, and Spotify leading product innovation. A Columbia College ’09 BA and Yale SOM ’13 MBA graduate\, she combines systems thinking\, human-centered design\, and social justice in both tech and community work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRashida Bumbray \n\n\n\nRashida Bumbray is an award-winning choreographer\, curator\, and filmmaker deeply rooted in Black vernacular and folk traditions\, including ring shouts\, hoofing\, and Blues improvisation. Like Zora Neale Hurston and Katherine Dunham\, Bumbray merges curatorial and ethnographic methodologies with avant-garde practices\, crafting intimate performances and films reimagining sacred and secular rituals. Her work explores the architectures of improvisation\, surrender\, and possession\, offering poignant responses to contemporary experiences of displacement\, erasure\, and collective forgetting. Bumbray’s practice has earned numerous accolades\, including the 2024 Anonymous Was A Woman Award\, a 2024 Ruby’s Artist Award\, a 2024 Tate Infinities R&D Award\, and a 2019 United States Artist Fellowship. She was Civic Practice Artist in Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 2017 to 2021. Her performances and films have been presented by institutions\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Black Star Film Festival; Dia: Chelsea (with Leslie Hewitt); Harlem Stage; Dancing While Black; SummerStage; Tate Modern (with Simone Leigh);  the New Museum (with Simone Leigh)\, and Project Row Houses. Her work\, “Run Mary Run\,” was named among The New York Times’s best performances of 2012 and is featured in Common’s short film\, “Black America Again” (2016)\, directed by Bradford Young. She was nominated for a Bessie Award for Outstanding Emerging Choreographer and continues to push the boundaries of dance\, film\, and ritual performance. A graduate of Oberlin College\, Bumbray also has an MA in Africana Studies from New York University. DESCRIPTION:Coming Home to Oneself\, is a restorative Yoga Nidra program designed specifically for elders. The class is led by dancer\, yoga instructor\, and retired Special Education Teacher Dianne Scott. Yoga Nidra is a deep relaxation practice that reconnects with the breath\, guides awareness through the body\, and encourages rest and renewal.  \n\n\n\nThe program includes two 60-minute sessions:  \n\n\n\nSession 1: 12:00-1:00 pm Session 2: 2:30-3:30 pm  \n\n\n\nDianne brings over 20 years of experience working with seniors\, creating classes that honor all bodies while inspiring ease\, empowerment\, and connection.  \n\n\n\nAll class sessions are limited to 30 participants.  \n\n\n\nWeeksville is home\, and your comfort matters to us. Nevada Diggs\, followed by closing remarks from Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts at 8 pm. \n\n\n\nHomework is the coinciding project of our inaugural Curator-in-Residence Program and marks the beginning of a new season of programming running from February through March. The exhibition brings together artists working across photography\, sculpture\, textiles\, and video to explore home as a site of labor\, memory\, and transformation. Engaging the domestic sphere as both an intimate and political space\, the works reflect on what it means to build\, rebuild\, and belong. \n\n\n\nGrounded in Weeksville’s legacy as both history and home\, Homework echoes the founding belief that creating a home is inseparable from claiming space in the world.
